Perfume scent families, explained

In short: perfumes are grouped into families by their main character. Floral and warm floral are the classic best-sellers (Good Girl, Miss Dior, Coco Mademoiselle). Gourmand is the big trend (Cloud, Lost Cherry, Sweet Tooth). Musky skin scents (Glossier You, Missing Person) are for people who want something subtle. Find the family you like, then shop within it.

Top, heart and base notes

A perfume changes as it dries. Top notes (citrus, light fruits) come first, heart notes (florals, spices) take over within about 15 minutes, and base notes (woods, vanilla, musk, amber) linger for hours. Always judge a perfume on skin after it has dried down.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular perfume family right now?
Sweet gourmands (vanilla, caramel, cherry and chocolate) are a huge trend: 7 of our 24 best-sellers are gourmands, including Cloud, Lost Cherry, Vanilla 28 and Sweet Tooth. Warm florals like Good Girl still top the overall sales charts.
What's the difference between Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette?
Eau de Parfum (EDP) usually has a higher concentration of fragrance oils than Eau de Toilette (EDT), so it tends to last longer and feel richer. Body mists are lighter still.
What are top, heart and base notes?
Top notes are what you smell first (often citrus) and fade within minutes. Heart notes (often florals) form the main character. Base notes (woods, vanilla, musk, amber) last longest.
