How to choose a signature scent

In short: pick the scent family you love, sample two or three best-sellers from it in small sizes, wear each on your skin for a full day, and buy the one you still love after three days. Don't buy a full bottle based on a paper strip.

The 5-step method

  1. Pick your family. Take the quiz below or read scent families explained.
  2. Shortlist 2–3 best-sellers. Use the comparison table and filter by family.
  3. Sample small. Minis, travel sprays and store testers cost far less than full bottles. See our under-$50 list.
  4. Test on skin, not paper. Spray one wrist per scent, wait for the dry-down, and check again after 2, 4 and 8 hours.
  5. Use the 3-day rule. Wear your favorite for three days in a row. If you still love it, that's your signature. Then buy the size you'll actually finish.

Tips

  • Test no more than three scents at once, or your nose gets tired.
  • Think about where you'll wear it: a soft skin scent suits the office, a warm gourmand suits date night.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my signature scent?
Start with the scent family you like most, sample two or three best-sellers from it in small sizes, test each on your skin for a full day, and buy the one you still love after three days.
Should I buy perfume without smelling it?
It's safer to try a mini, a sample or a store tester first, because perfume smells different on everyone's skin.
How many sprays of perfume should I use?
Two to four sprays on pulse points is plenty for most Eaux de Parfum. Use fewer for strong scents and more for body mists.
